Deepak Chopra is a world renowned author, a public speaker and also an advocate in the alternative medicine industry, was born in 1946 in New Delhi, India.
Chopra studied medicine when he was in India, and later moved to the United States in 1970. He continued to pursue his passion in medicine and became chief of staff at the New England Memorial Hospital. However, he became disenchanted with the Western medicine and started looking into alternative medicine, and this was when he met and learned from the transcendental meditation guru, Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Chopra then quit his job and started the Maharishi Ayur-Veda Products International.
Chopra’s center quickly became successful and shot him to fame with the Ayurvedic medicine. His clients included many celebrities like Michael Jackson, Elizabeth Taylor and the fashion designer, Donna Karen. That year, Chopra also published his best-selling book, Quantum Healing: Exploring the Frontiers of Mind/Body Medicine and Perfect Health: The Complete Mind/Body Guide. His book and his friendship with Michael Jackson later won him an interview with Oprah Winfrey, which made him famous with his work. Within 24 hours of his book launching, Chopra has sold 137,000 copies, and more than 400,000 copies more were sold by the end of the week.
In 1993, Chopra left Transcendental Meditation movement and moved to California to start Chopra Center for Wellbeing with neurologist David Simon. It is said that Chopra’s businesses grossed about $20 million annually and he was worth approximately $80 million in 2014. Up to date, Chopra has written and published 86 books, which 14 of them are best sellers such as The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success. Chopra also contributes as a regular columnist for the Washington Post and the San Francisco Chronicle.
In 1999, Time magazine named Chopra “the poet-prophet of alternative medicine” and regarded him as one of the top 100 heroes of the century.
